High-end Compact Camera for Aspirants

Digital point-and-shoot camera with 10.0MP resolution, 20x optical zoom, and Digic IV image processor

Canon PowerShot SX10IS Review

Overview

SUMMARY: With a 20x optical zoom, wide angle and a swivel screen for new angle shots, the Canon Powershot SX10IS has the appeal of the higher-level DSLRs concentrated in a fixed-lens camera.

HIGH POINTS: excellent image quality, AA battery power, 20x zoom, wide angle, bright swivel LCD, memory card placement, image stabilization, good video quality.

LOW POINTS: no filter thread, no tether with the lens cap, a little heavy, built-in flash not up to the lens range, some minor distortion and chromatic aberration.

VERDICT: While this camera cannot stand the comparison with the more advanced DSLRs, its really interesting features give the photography enthusiast a whole world of new possibilities to play with and place Canon a step ahead of the competition.

Introduction

The best camera is always the one you have with you and, with its bunch of different lenses, a SLR may be a little too much of a hassle to carry around. That’s exactly where the Canon Powershot SX10 IS comes into the picture. With a lens ranging from wide angle to a full 20x optical zoom, this point-and-shoot offers a full array of new possibilities! With this very capable point-and-shoot camera, Canon is aiming at those of us who take photography seriously enough to look for a sophisticated camera, but who are not yet willing to go through the hassle of a full SLR. The gamble pays off as the Powershot SX10 IS is really promising indeed.

Image Stabilization in Action

Ever wonder how does the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS get the “IS” from? Well, the IS stands for Image Stabilization technology, one of the key features for high quality zoom. Here are videos from YouTube demonstrating the zooms with, and without, having the IS activated.
-Don’t worry about the buffering, each video runs less than 30 seconds.

We’ll start with the Image Stabilizer turned off:

Now it’s on:

Pretty slick, huh?

It’s pretty obvious in both videos that the PowerShot SX10 IS camera was not mounted on the tripod – but that’s the idea. The picture quality from the second video looks stable enough without it. We’re sure that the picture quality will be even better when mounted on one.
